V5500 with passive heatsinks?

I'm in the process of converting my "work" PC into a near silent system. Currently the only pieces in it the make noise are a fan on the power regulators (problem area on early Abit boards running hot, hence the fan) and the V5500 fans.

I'm thinking that a pair of V-3000 heatsinks on the V-5500 should work rather well considering that the VSA-100 chips run at the same clock speed.

I have always been of the opinion that the only reason that the VSA-100 chips had fans were for marketing reasons. Remember the flack 3dfx got from the press on the Voodoo 3?

Has anyone tried this? Anyone have some dead V-3000 cards with a heatsinks I could buy?

Well since most V-3000 and V-3500 are still running just fine at their default speeds of 166 & 183 mhz I would think "running too hot" is subjective. The Falcon Northwest cards were even clocked at 200 mhz with no active cooling.

Just what I planned on doing, I already have a V3 up and running a loop with the probe in place.

Took all the fans I had and ran them all to find the quietest one and stuck that on the power regulators, all I have to do now is find a pair of V3-3000 heatsinks. Except for the V-5500 fans I can't hear the thing running.

Man I just sold three on ebay for change 2 weeks ago too! Never fails....

Turok demo, temp taken back of card after 1 hour-

V3-2000 at 143 mhz = 124F
V-5500 at 166 mhz with 4x "AA" enabled = 115F

I think we can all agree that the V3 temps would be higher is a V-3000 or 3500 were tested.

V3 was tested with an open board on the bench, V5 in a sealed, but large case.

Now to find those heatsinks...

A pair of V3000 heatsinks would work perfect and they are a dime a dozen.

You can use passive water cooling for the voodoo 5, provided the card is mounted vertical (you will need a desktop case). Making your own air heatsinks is dirt cheap. Anyways, an aircooled system has moving parts- they're called fans aren't they? Andy

Watercooled systems generaly require pumps, pumps and fittings fail, not to mention I'm not going to invest in a watercooled system for a P3-700.
