S-Video Queries
30.05.04 at 16:19:58

As daft as it may sound, I have never taken the advantage of, and used an S-Video port on ANY graphics card!  Embarrassed

I've never tried it.  Either because I have never needed to in the past, or just not had time to start learning how to use it.

I know the general aspects of S-Video are that the port will allow me to use a normal TV with an s-video connection, as a monitor for my PC. (I hope this is true! Undecided)

Now has the time come when I need to start trying out this scenario.

If I was to get hold of a 3D accelerator (possibly a V1) or a 2D/3D card with an S-Video port on, could I simply connect it from my PC to TV and do away with my monitor? Would this work?  ???

It's just that I have a TV and VHS in my room and a PC with a monitor, but I would like to get rid of the monitor as it's only a 14" ugly old beige thing. Tongue

Is it as simple to just connect the S-Video port to the TV from the graphics card and this will produce a replacement for my monitor?

What are the best cards to be looking at? I only need a cheap low-end card so I was looking at maybe acquiring a V1 with an S-Video port on (Canopus Pure3D, miroHiScore 3D).

Anyone know any better ones?

EDIT:

It has to be a PCI variant as it's for an old machine.

Hm, technically, yes...

...but...

While for Gaming this might be okay, the S-VID out usually doesn't yield a very usable replacement for a normal Monitor to do normal work on the Desktop and alike.

Chances are, the TV Screen will be very low resolution, somewhat blurry and smaller text very hard to read.

It better be a very good TV to yield usable Output in 800x600 or higher.

It's a standard portable TV, around 14" - 15" screen size.

Drop that idea mate, waste of time trying.

better buy a good second-hand 17" monitor or something of that sort

Is it really that bad?  Undecided

What is the given result?

What would it look like on the TV?

Basicly, unless you have a 10,000$ Hi-Def Plasma screen, it will look like Sh*t Smiley

Sh*t as in totally unusable, or Sh*t as in basic crap quality?? ???

The PC I would use it on would be rarely used, just to launch a few benchmarks on.

As long as I would be able to make the icons and text out on the screen, that's all I'll need it for. It's not a long-term solution.

Uh well, said you have a 14" TV?

On that it will look like.. uh.. Unreal Tournament 2004 running at 160*120 with 2x AA and and an LOD bias that would make a 1px straight line look like a 50px pipe Smiley

Get the idea? Wink

If you use extremely high contrast themes though, with like 72px fonts, it might be usable. but then again - a blind person could use that.. lol

Yep, on a portable 14" TV it really will be a pain...

And I also don't know what Resolution this will limit you to, so it might even end up unusable for Benchmarking or other purposes you had in mind for it.

PS.
Last time I sat actually working with a Computer in front of a Portable TV, was in 1985 I think, using a Commodore C64 Grin

Yep, me too!  Grin

The C64 rules! I still have one in the cupboard with all it's full packaging and accessories! Wink

Not worth much to anyone else except sentimental value for myself.

Allo mate! Wink

Yah, trust me when I say that Falcon and DenisF are correct! Roll Eyes

The last card I used with T.V. out was my uncles Matrox G400MAX. Tongue

Even though it's only COMPOSITE (which is even WORSE than S-Video) the picture resolution on a TV is SERIOUSLY crappy (with the exception of a 100Hz HDTV). Shocked Roll Eyes

Your best bet is either another monitor, or you could get a monitor switchbox to flick between PC's... Cheesy

Just a thought as my uncle has a switchbox connected between his two PC's. Wink

Yeah, it looks like I'm sticking with the monitor!  Sad

I wanted to get shot of it because it's making the place look untidy! Angry

However I could rid of the portable TV and stick a VoodooTV card in the rig and use the monitor as a TV instead! Grin
