Title: 233mhz and the v3
Post by レイレイ on 13.06.08 at 18:19:47
Hi
i've this 233mhz here with a Voodoo3 3000 AGP
Pentium II, 440LX (66mhz fsb)
192mb of ram
Windows XP
what i want to do, is optimize the crap out of it
i've upped it from a voodoo banshee recently and saw a disappointing 2.5% performance increase overall.
Any tips! Games like AVP and Midtown Madness (1999 games) are running pretty slow and trackmania nations forever is like 0.5fps lol.

Here's a couple suggestions....

If you use a slight older O/S like Win2K or Win98, your performance will increase as they are less hogs of your system resources.

If you want to keep your O/S, then upgrade your mobo, CPU & possibly the ram too.  You need more power inside your computer.   :)

Indeed, go for Microsoft Windows '98. It'll be faster. Also install the latest 3dfx reference drivers as they will run good on your system.
Your CPU is quite slow though. The Voodoo3 will show more muscles with a faster CPU. You might consider upgrading to a 300/333MHz CPU or overclocking the 233MHz Pentium II by raising the FSB to 75 (262,5MHz( or 83 (291MHz)  :).

By the way: Trackmania Nations is probably just to heavy for your system.

the cpu is too slow to really see the benefit of v3s higher clock and multitexturing capabilities.a P3 600+ would suit the card much better..

i've never overclocked this machine before, i want to avoid mobo/cpu upgrades as much as possible since this is like my 'ifallelsefails' computer, hence the windows xp (to use the latest flash, unicode stuff, steam, and java vm, all of which are artificially locked out from use on Windows 9X for ridiculous marketing reasons)

i'm not sure if the fsb on the 440lx is overclockable

Windows 95 was on the machine as a dualbooter but unfortunately ran into a nasty vmm32.vxd issue preventing it from starting up. Fixing that would mean nuking XP too. I don't want to nuke XP.

no need to overclock,if you are looking for a speed boost just pick a used p3 cpu from ebay (choose one with 100fsb to ensure compatibility),last time I looked, they were almost free.

eehhm -> the LX doesn't support 100MHz FSB. Even IF a 500MHz PIII would work (the bigger ones surely won't cos of the CuMine Core), it'll be running on 333MHz....

*checking google*..true.in that case, just go for some celeron, they use 66FSB up to the 700MHz model,if memory serves.I have few of them myself,if you are interested..I even have the s370 to slot1 converter.

the highest Celleron with 66mhz bus would be this http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Celeron/Intel-Celeron%20766%20-%20RB80526RX766128%20(BX80526F766128).html
but having a Coppermine core would work in this case given the 440LX chipset. so an older celeron (medocino) could be a solution and give some performace boost to the sistem.

BIOS flashed, ram maxed out (512mb pc100), and now the system is armed with a KYRO II, things are still slow :(

I might overclock. I only got one fan for the CPU though and I don't know how hot these early P2s get

They can take ALOT of heat, believe me. It's next to impossible to grill a PII...

My PII is running at 290mhz and is stable, there's a nice speed boost :) (it took 16fps avg to 28fps avg in MDK2)

now the system is also armed with a powervr pcx2

OMG DUAL POAWRVR CARD
