Post by ps47 on 22.11.09 at 13:38:04
..seems like the k8usa has an agp universal slot, has someone tried to run a v3/v5 in this board?

If board has AGP universal, no problems should be occurred using V3/V4 series or V5 5500

Not true, there's a lot of early P4 boards that have universal AGP, but works only with 1.5 V videocards, I even know a few people that burned videocards in such boards.

yeah, that is why I'm asking if someone has a personal experience with this board.

Uhm...these boards have Universal AGP slot, so they are physically compatible....but outputs ONLY 1,5V, so they are electrically incompatible...uhm it's a weird thing to me and I was not aware of!

Ok, there is a review here: http://www.ocworkbench.com/2003/soyo/k8usa%20dragon%20ultra/k8usadragonultra-1.htm

They states that AGP is 8x, so I suppose 1.5V only

Here you can see some pics: http://www.ocworkbench.com/2003/soyo/k8usa%20dragon%20ultra/k8usagallery2.htm . Look at the first pic on the left. It shows AGP slot covered by sticker that beware user from using NOT 1.5V VGAs...

Here screenshot from bios: http://www.ocworkbench.com/2003/soyo/k8usa%20dragon%20ultra/k8usagallery4.htm

The third pic on the left shows AGP volt settings. You can raise voltage from 1.5 to 1.8, so it is impossible reach the needed 3.3V...

Conclusion: Nope. It seems that k8usa from soyo is not useable with 3dfx AGP cards different from Voodoo4. It is a pity!

Unfortunately, I never had that board, you could do a little search on the net and see what other peoples say. Also, if you don't care too much if the boards gets smoked,  you could try an old V3 2000 or V3 3000 on it, those videocards are really cheap and easy to find, burning one wouldn't be a big problem  ;)

Trying a V3 with doubt that it goes up in smokes, it is a criminal intent ;D. They are very common, but every Voodoo card is precious!

Anyway, I think there are no doubts on K8USA incompatibility. If you can find user manual on the net (I tried quickly, but had no success) you can put the final word on that ;)

Well, very quick search :

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=50371&Sku=S450-2205&SRCCODE=CNETFEED&CMP=OTC-CNETFEED

-this one says : AGP Support
The K8USA Dragon Ultra provides one 8X/4X AGP slot that uses 1.5V AGP cards only.

Then, we have this : http://www.fixya.com/support/p281393-soyo_sy_k8usa_motherboard/manual-35536

BIG STOP sign there : 2.    AGP  cards  running  at  3.3v  are  not  supported.  Only  AGP cards  running  at  1.5v  (most  4x  or  8x  AGP  cards)  are supported on this motherboard.

That seems to be taken from the motherboard manual, so...

The slot is AGP8X, so I'd say that 99.99 % it won't work with 3.3V cards. The reason why that slot is universal is because it's an AGP Pro slot, those slots are ussually not "key-ed" properly, because some AGP Pro cards might lack the 4x/8x key and they must fit in the slots.

Good seeking job! ;)

Not completely true. There are AGP Pro 8x/4x (only 1,5V) platform based that not have Universal slot, but it is notched as standard AGP 8x/4x slots. I can recall AGP slot of my P4C800-E Deluxe for example. It is AGP 8x/4x only, but has AGP Pro form factor ;)

If there are cards lacking of AGP 8x/4x key, probably they are AGP 1x or 2x cards...so only 3.3V

This slot can physically accept a such card, but can output only 1,5V...so it should prevent dangerous installation by user...sorry but this seems inconsistent to me :-/
