Title: Voodoo1 locks up after a minute - HELP!!!
Post by framer on 12.12.08 at 04:54:46
Hi I'm glad I fould this place,

I've been playing around with an old Diamond Voodoo1 board.  I've tried about all the drivers and DX combinations inluding the correct ones.  The good news is it runs great with almost all combination.  But the problem is it only runs about a munite before the system freezes and needs a hardware reset.

A bad board.

I've tried three cables from other V2 boards that I own, same results.

OS = win 95

Try a cooling fan blowing on the card.

Try the original Diamond Driver.

I've got also some retro systems running with a V1, and one has the same problem, but only with original 3dfx reference drivers...

yup,seems like the card is unable to run at stock clock (50/50 MHz),try underclocking it to 45/45..either edit the registry values or use some tool like Tweek for Voodoo!,see here: http://www.falconfly.de/tools.htm

Depending on his system, could be the old overheat bug.

He should test the GPU temperature directly after such a crash. If he curses me for giving that advice (for his burned finger), I think we got it nailed ;)

Which CPU are you running? If I remember correctly some (I thought the latest) 3dfx reference drivers were causing problems on AMD K6-based systems. Try running an older or newer driver :).

Be careful if you start 'messing' around with drivers by yourself. Older games, like DOS games, are going to search the GLIDE-files using DOS' path environment. Example: if you have the latest driver installed (for Windows) it will search in the Windows directory. But, if you copy the 3dfx-files directly into the root directory of the game it will use those drivers instead of the ones in the Windows directory. Anyhow, as long as you're not fiddling around with drivers manually this should not be such a problem.

Thanks for the replys.  Looks like I will start with a heat sink and a fan.  Then underclock if needed.

FYI it in an old Tyan S1837 Thunder w/dual P3 850's.

I'll post the results here in a day or two.
