Title: Maximum recommended requirements
Post by razrx on 29.11.08 at 22:22:22
What is the maximum recommended hardware for an original Voodoo Graphics based card?  I plan to use a PURE3D or a Monster3D.
Specifially the Motherboard chipset.
NOTE: it must have one ISA slot

I'd say that anything more than a P2-350 is a waste, but you could go with a P3 board if you really want. I remember that back in 98, when V2 was out, almost all tests proven that P1 MMX 233 MHz was the limit for V1, P2 was much too fast for V1, there were only some very small gains in new games.

p3 based board with intel chipset would be my recommendation.bit overkill for v1 as already mentioned, but it shouldnt really matter much, considering the price of those boards/cpus ;D

Hmmmm....

Ok, I will look for a motherboard that max's out to a PII 450mhz and get a PII 450mhz chip.

Any motherboard recommendations?

Just about any BX440 board should be fine. Intel, Abit, Asus are very good choices. You can't go wrong with a prebuild, brands like Dell or Compaq are very good. Fujitsu or IBM is ok too, but they like too much proprietary boards, layouts and components.

Indeed, go for an i440BX-based motherboard. Don't get to fancy and try faster parts as the Voodoo Graphics boards might fail running in modern hardware. For example; I had trouble using the Voodoo Graphics in an i820 slot 1 board with RD-RAM. Tried both Pentium II and Pentium III CPU's but didn't work out. Another example: an AMD Athlon XP OC'ed to 2533MHz on nForce2 (EPoX 8RDA) runs fine ::). Anyhow, I noticed that the newer the hardware, the less Voodoo Graphics (not to mention Voodoo Rush :X) boards did actually work properly.

Yes, I have been downgrading my Voodoo 1 PC to find the highest working board possible with my V1 cards.

I've gone through a Tualatin based P3 mobo, a Palomino based EPoX 8KTA3+PRO.  I have on order a 8KTA2 mobo which is 100mhz only, but I think that will be too high, so I was thinking of getting a PII only board.  Some of those BX440 boards support a lot, including 133mhz fsb, which I have been told could be an underlying reason why I'm having issues with my Pure3D and Monster3D cards.

I have been trying EPoX boards but maybe I should go with ASUS?  I think I had an ABiT BE6 back in the day.....

I'm very curious why do you insist on trying the "highest" configuration for a V1 ? Breaking some 3dmark record at V1 category ?

It just doesn't make any sense to me, I told you, anything higher than a P2 350 is simply not gonna get any performace for a V1, even if you overclock that V1 twice the frequency (wich I doubt you can, even with nitrogen cooling, the TMU chip on the V1 gets *really* hot.

So, try to find a good BX440 board, slap there a P2 cpu and be happy. I'd even advise to go P1 way, that was the config back then, P2 got on the market after the V1 launch. So P1+V1, nice vintage config, P2 or P3 good for V2 SLI or V3, and a nice Tualatin or Athlon should make a nice CPU for V4/V5.

Since parts are quite cheap to get, I may as well get the fastest V1 board/cpu I can.  :)

Also, with the newer hardware comes newer or faster features, such as onboard USB or higher ATA speeds.

I will follow your advisement and do some searching.

I had no problems with a Celeron 1000 on a BX board (10 x 100)

Hm, not a bad idea. A 3DMark99 contest :P. Now that would require serious tweaking because every 0.001MHz of the card will get you higher points ;D.

I have an ASUS P3B-F with an unknown slot 1 P3 cpu on it's way.

I really hope this one works.   ::)

It should work fine. Anyway, it would be very nice it you could put a fan to blow under the V1 card, they tend to get really hot on "fast" machines (and P3 is fast for V1).

Another good board was msi 6163 pro..a friend of mine had one,and it was very cool..

For the fun I used my V1 on a X2 4200+ based system without problem  ;D

But my 3dfx ring is based on a PII800EB, hoping to move to a Tualatin in few week.

I also successfully ran Diamond Monster II and V3 2000 PCI on a C2D combo (Asus P5K Deluxe + C2D 6420) - ran like a charm  8-)

I really never found a board that didn't run V2. I didnt try V1 on new HW though. Maybe its something about V1?

I had very little success running a v1 card in modern systems..and I was never able to get stable operation from v2SLI when running in newer amd based systems either (random glide lockups)..right now it seems like you need an intel chipset,or a small miracle to get it working ::)

do you guys have any more details on this? OSes,chipsets etc?

So I tried an EPoX 8KTA2 board with no success with a Diamond Monster3D or Pure3D card.

I have on order an ABiT LX6 with processor and ram.  That should be the board that works for me and my V1's.  It should be here late next week.  I also have a P3B-F board on order, but I won't see it until April.

To run on AMD systems you probably need an older driver/Glide version. Don't know which files should be older but somehow it is possible :). I managed to run both the Voodoo Graphics as the Voodoo II (in SLI) using an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2533MHz with an nForce 2 (Which is totally overkill in CPU-terms of course).

which v2 driver did you use on that nforce2 machine?

I also ran V2 SLI on Abit NF7-S with a mobile Barton. At that time I used FastVoodoo2 XP V4.0 Gold Edition with some files from V3.5. I remember having trouble detecting SLI, but after tickling some DLL's I got the rig up and running.

Basically I think I installed V4.0 first, and when it didn't work I installed 3.5 which didnt work either. Then I installed 4.0 again, and I copied one DLL file from 3.5 (dont ask me which one, I am not sure, but I think it was glide2x.dll) over the new version and that did the trick.

As the matter affect, I think I posted somewhere in this forum what I exactly did...  :-/

P.S. System was Win XP pro. I also had Win98 as a secondary system, but I dont remember having any problems in Win98.

I used FastVoodoo with a patch for the Gendac I/O error which you can find here. Well, if I remember correctly :P. Been a few years.

I bought an ABit LX6 and it came with a Celeron 400.  I had 256MB of PC133.  I installed and updated Win98SE and the same with all the hardware.

I installed UT 99 - GOTY version and amazingly it worked!   Kinda sluggish, but the video was rendering in 3dfx and no lockups or distortion!!!   :)

I will try getting some older games going like Whiplash and Descent I/II.
