Title: what is mini power supply for voodoo5 6000?
Post by frank-bao on 26.07.05 at 15:10:08
hi,everyone:

how large power supply can support voodoo5 6k,350w?

400w or as more?

i doubt this coz some guys who own v5 6k suggested me that the best choice of v5 6k is 400w or more and the mainboard for that is kt333...

and what model of mainboard is prefect using v5 6k?

a 300Watt PSU should do fine, but be aware the +12 volt rail must support a minimal of 4.6 amp's, the more the better
ofcourse.

The PSU I use is an Enermax EG365 350 watt PSU
more info on the V56K types and PSU recommendations can be found here:

Bear in mind that '300W' of '400W' says nothing about the quality of the power supply.

There are power supply's which claim to have 420W but only deliver ~250W at a constant rate. The specified 420W is peak output which the power supply can handle for only one second.

Please buy a decent power supply when using an 3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 5 6000. Take a good brand with enough ampères on the rails. In the Netherlands the better powersupply's start within a range of € 60,-.

Some brands you should not buy --> Q-Tec, Trust or Sweex (or any other powersupply which claims to have high power output (480W or more) for a very low price (€30,- or more) ;).

I allready have a very good brand ;)

Enermax EG365 350Watt PSU it does 26 amps on the +12Volt rail max !

hehe
here it's spreadsheet:

look at the specs of the EG365 ;)

The German brand Tagan makes splendid power supplies!

so does Enermax and Antec, Tyan and Supermicro have good stuff also ;)

top tested power supply for several years running----PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool, when i was doing my case mod i wanted a chrome case for the psu and took one off a cheaper well known brand, it was a joke, when you look at the inside of the 2 psu's they werent even in the same class, it was evident why p & c turbo cool psu's are so much more than all the others, every single part was way more heavy duty, but the flip side is the price, you get what you pay for

But never assume that your (Tyan, Supermicro Antec, Enermax, Tagan, whatever expensive PSU) works good.

2 powersupply's --> PSU1 was € 130,-
PSU 2 was € 100,-.

Both PSU's died slowly (gave too low voltages, which can kill hardware, especially hard drives).
Both PSU's we're send out for RMA and I got new ones back. PSU1 is an different (better) model for almost the same price. PSU2 is just the same PSU.

I'm not calling names since it could be bad for the reputation of the brand. Since the RMA procedure was fine and it looked like a bad line of PSU's (the PSU's we're bought at the same time and based on the same technology).

When  working with expensive and exclusive hardware it's better to check the status of your hardware a couple of times per month. Try to use a multimeter because many PC's cannot read the correct voltage and will show wrong results in the BIOS.

My enermax EG365 is the best one I ever had in years, it's already 4 years in service without failing.

the Antec True Power 550P EPS12V is about 2.5 mounths old, extreemly rockstable in SMP machines.

But gett'n back to the topic the minimal PSU recommended for a Voodoo5 6000 is at least 300 watt's, Gary told me this, iot actually depends on what you have in your system, if you have like 6 HDD's a DVD player/burner and DVD rom driver then a 550 Watt would be the better perspective.

well staying on track i was more talking about the power staying constant without drops, and in every study the one i was talking about comes in first every time, ive had the enermax psu and never a problem, ive never even had a problem with my shuttle psu, but if you want the best power and cooling is it. there can be only one ::)

I have to agree with BFG as that is the one I trust my Voodoo5 6000 with. PC Power and Cooling, Turbo-Cool 430watt ATX Power Supply (Black). Why would you trust your V5 6K with anything less? I would hate to be crying later that my POS power supply destroyed my V5 6K :'(

okay thanx for the tip then ;) at least I know what I need for my upcomming project, The Force Is With us again!  8)

cheers everyone, let's hope that this year end shall be a good one for all of us, that is my biggest wish.

I suppose ensuring that the supply stays 'above' the amount required, rather than constant is more feasible.  :)

I use a Q-TEC 550W PSU in my main rig to power a V5MAC, R9500PRO, 1xSATA, 1xATA-100, 2x DVD drives amongst many other components.

For me, it's about making sure there is enough juice in reserve if the machine needs it.  ;)

Very difficult to guarantee that you can keep a constant rate, depending on what your system is doing at the time.

But remember that your Q-Tec PSU is not 550W. It's 420W at max I guess.

Q-Tec Power supplies are low budget. They are less efficiënt, produce more heat and are less reliable.
The Q-Tec "550W" version is a lot better than the Q-Tec "420W".

If you want to run an AMD Athlon XP @ 2,4GHz you should not buy a Q-Tec "420W" since the PSU will overload and put your harddrives in great danger.

I still use my Q-Tec 420W. I've installed 2 new fans which are a lot more quiet than the original (very loud) fans. The power supply is running for over 2 years now and runs pretty fine (but inefficiënt and warm).
The PSU is running in an AMD Duron 1800 @ 2250MHz. I'm not overclocking any higher since the powersupply is not able to handle the CPU. (AMD K7 CPU's uses a lot of the 5V rail).

Granted, it is louder than my old 400W PSU but that was expected due to the '150W' increase.  There is also a lot of heat coming out of the back of it.  The interior temps seem ok.  Maximum of 31c (when playing SWAT4 for 5 hours  ;)).

Still, it does the job.  :)

But I don't understand why it would be 420W when it is labelled 550W, and there is already a '420W' model (the one you have).

They name it 550W because 550W is the peak output before the PSU explodes  :P

The Q-Tec PSU can handle the peak output for one second. If everything is alright it should shut down when overloaded. If not (and there's a chance it would happen) the PSU can damage your hardware.

Next point, 550W sells better than 420W ;).
If Q-Tec had 'Antec Truepower 550W technology' in their power supply's.... Q-Tec would probably name it :
Q-Tec dualfan gold 1333W (or something similiar :-X )

The watts listed on a PSU do not show the power of the PSU. It's comparable with MHz... MHz actually says nothing about the real speed of a computer.

[glb]and what model of mainboard is prefect using v5 6k? [/glb]

Okay, we have about talked out the power supply question. Lets change gears and address the motherboard question...

I know I don't have the fastest 6000 mainboard. I was thinking of looking into maybe a Sempron chip as my board tops out @ 266MHz FSB so I'm left with my 2600+ Possibly the Sempron/Duron chip might allow me to go a little faster. I don't see much need to swap out the mainboard just to get to 3000+ I mean I could, but would it be worth it :-/

As many of us, if not all of us, know that it's a whole lot easier and less trouble (configuration wise) to drop in a CPU than replace a motherboard/CPU.

My board: Gigabyte 7VRX KT333

Gary has done a lot a research on this matter. If I were going to replace mine, I would probably follow in his foot steps ;) Again the V5 6K is too valuable to experiment with.

ah,  gamma, i have the same board as gary, i just got the latest bios in it, also has a 2500 barton from first runs, so its not locked, i planning on a whole new record for 2001se with this baby, really for AMD its the way togo, for some reason those first 2500 can really o/c, then a 333 chipset board well make a load of difference, epox is my first choice because they o/c better than any other manufactur for the old boards. this is the one ive got in the modded case im working on.

now intel is my next setup, i found a sweet little mobo that will take the 3.06/533 p4, it has the 2x 3.3v, i got a modded case waiting for trhis setup ;)

so you have to great choices right there, the amd will be faster than the 3.06 if you can get it to run at least to 333 and 2.5 ghz

there is really no reason to hold your card back with a 266fsb, everything ppl say about the 5500 (6000 i cant speak for since i dont have one :'()  not needing a faster cpu are full of it, if any of you believe that crap than pick a game and use fraps, the 3dfx card might not be doing anymore but the cpu sure the hell must be then, the difference between a 2400 at 266 and a 3000 at 333 is big in game like c.o.d. so to me its about playing games with your 3dfx cards, and you gotta have some fps for that, otherwise put that baby on the shelf lol

i know were all different when it comes to our 3dfx cards, for me, if i cant play my games(whatever they are) with my 3dfx card then its going on the shelf, i'll do everything i can to keep it in there as long as i can by turning the settings down, o/c card, board, cpu, playing at 800 by 600, when these things that i can do will no longer work then i will not have any use for a 3dfx card but for my display(which i like) so i guess what im saying gamma is it comes down to why we have these cards in the first place, if your gonna just play old games than a 266 fsb is fine, but c.o.d. and similar games really play much better upgraded, for myself i cant see playing games at less than 30 fps

The EPoX EP-8K3A+ is known to be the best Mainboard for All types Voodoo5 6000, the EPoX EP-8K5A2/EP-8K5A2+ is known to be the best mobo for Rev.A3 3400 models.
