Title: Best frames per second in 3dfx games
Post by razrx on 31.03.08 at 16:51:56
I'm looking for some good discussion as I've been wondering which gives the PC user the most frames per second in 3dfx games.

1 - P4 3.4GHz Socket 775 w Hyperthreading, DFI LanParty 875P-T, 2x 512MB DDR PC3200 in dual channel with a VoodooMAC 5500 flashed to PC

OR

2 - P3 800, Epox mobo, 2x 256MB SD Ram PC133 with a V5 6000 AGP

To my knowledge neither card does hardware T&L, so they both don't have GPUs.  Therefore a faster CPU will make more of a difference, versus using GPU'd video cards.  So, I'm wondering if the difference in the rest of the system will more than make up for the difference between the video cards???  Obviously, anything other than 3dfx gaming is not a concern, but is another reason to go with system #1.

Please air your opinions   :D

None of those systems cand be considered a good choice. Why ? Well, in first system the videocard is too slow for the CPU, while in the second system the CPU is too slow for the videocard, I know that because even Athlon 900 is not enough for a V5 5500 AGP, so you can imagine that a P3 800 is even worse for a V5 6000.

Ideal choice would be Barton 3000+ (166 FSB) on a KT333 board with V5 6000, because I think that if you can afford a V5 6K, you will afford such setup, a fair price should be less than 100 $. Of course that a Core2 Duo System with a V5 6000 used with a AGP to PCI adapter would be even better, but such adapter is not easy to find, and the performance gain would be small, Barton 3000+ with DDR is quite a nice CPU for the V5 6000, you could do a Barton 2500+ @ 3200+, overclocking a KT333 board, but that a little risky.

I would go for the first System, if only those two Options exist.

For 3dfx Gaming, should be as good as it gets (Pentium III 800 is indeed much too slow for a V5-6k)
