Title: Fastest Intel and AMD chipsets that support V5 AGP
Post by gdonovan on 06.04.04 at 19:38:43
Can anyone tell me what to look out for? I wish to build the fastest box that I can to support a V5 AGP and Win98.

Thanks!

(3dfx theme, not done yet)

That's what I'm doing- I'm building 4, maybe 5 PC's to showcase the major 3dfx chips (V1, V2, Banshee, V3, & V5500) Heck I have most of the parts lying around and each one will reflect "state of the art" gaming rig for the timeframe the voodoo card was out.

For example- The V1 machine is a 233 mmx running 266 on a PA-2007 board with 1 meg cache, 64 megs EDO with a ET6000 or Matrox PCI for 2d, sound blaster 16 or AWE32 and of course the most powerful *consumer* level 3dfx card a Canopus Pure 3d 6 meg card with TV out. For the V2 I'm either going to run a set of Monster 12 meggers in SLI, or use my Quantum3d X-24 board.

The perfect setup would be a pair of Pure 3d's II with cooling fans and TV out, but I have been coming up dry on those...

Anyone know where I can score a Falcon NW 200 mhz V3?

Gary

thats sounds nice, im shooting for the fastest v5500 setup i can make, my idea for my case is good i just need a couple more items, just bought a v4000 off ebay, well anyways its nice to have a hobby that includes so many nice people ;) by the way are you going to have period cases to put these set-ups in or new cases, i think the old school cases would be a nice touch :)

In case you want to build an Intel System, look out for a board with SIS645dx chipset.
I have an Abit SA7 along with a Pentium4-2800 which runs the V5-6000 just fine...

Bear in mind that as you intend to use an AGP Voodoo5, you'll need a motherboard with an AGP interface that supports 3.3V signalling, otherwise you won't be able to install/use the Voodoo5 at all.. ;)

The rare Falcon Northwest Special Edition V3 (3500 TV), i guess ?

That's the one, must be a few floating around out there! Problem is it was so long ago most people who still have one might assume it's just a normal V3500-TV.

V4000? Is that one of the rare 16 meg cards? I just scored one of the oddball L-shaped V4500 last week.

Yes the machines will have period cases with the only modern touch being a clear side panel and a few pinpoint lights to showoff the detailed interior and cards.

You know how hard it was to find a decent looking AT mid tower case with a removable side panel???

Will be doing a webpage in a few weeks or months showing the details, I'm also working on a spotters guide for cards showing all the different variations made.

I wish 3dfx was still in business.

Hence my question on the board- Will be interesting to find out at which point the card is the bottleneck in performance vs CPU.

Of course this will depend on what is being played of course and screen resolution...

Well, it's well before you hit 1.6GHz on an athlon XP. My scores in 3d Mark 2001 SE:

Radeon 9500 @ 310/333:8756
Radeon 9500 softmod->9700 @ 310/333:12848
Voodoo 5 5500: 2754
