Title: Help needed
Post by dave on 18.03.04 at 05:29:47
Help needed!!!

I am trying to create a voodoo 2 SLI cable from a floppy cable. I only have 4 floppy cables, and they all have a twist in them ( as in natural for a floppy cable). Do I straighten this twist before I twist cables 16-19, or leave it in? Does anyone know of a more detailed guide than fast eddies? Help please I've been trying this for 3 days!!! Argh!!

thansk

Thanks again

I think all the Voodoo2 SLI cables have a small twist in them (two of the pins are switched about over half way through the belt).

Is it a genuine SLI cable or a standard IDE cable?
I am not 100% sure that a standard IDE cable would do the job so I wouldn't advise it (until proven otherwise by someone who has already tried this fact).

If your question is solely concerning the switch crossover in the belt, then yes, that's meant to be like that!

here you got it:

there's a description + picture in the middle of the main page.
tip: sometimes it's useful to search the forum's members homepages (given in the members overview page)  ;)

Ok, how about a fund to help this guy out. I'll buy the cable, but I need someone to pay for shipping.

I think Fast Eddie's guide should work just fine, with a little thinking:

So, you need to pry the little plastic piece off the top of the connectors, cut the cable to about 3-4 inches, and put it back together, twisting the four middle wires, numbers 16-19 I believe, and straightening the ones that were twisted before.

Wow

cool thanks for all the replys and tips guys and gals

been away a while blowing up PC's, just got back on mine an decided to whap the voodoo2 in a PCI only (no AGP  :-/ ) P3 - 650mhz system to test her a bit. Been collecting all the 3dfx games from the old '97 / '96 warez discs for a megatest  ;D . As regards to the SLI cable, after trying for so long I gave up and passed the task on to my brother who is better at that sort of thing. He says with confidence it will be easy to make one, so hopefully he will do it. Meantime the wickedGL drivers and the 650mhz P3 will push my single board setup to it's limits. I have 4 voodoo 2's, 3 of the 12meg identical boards and 1 8 meg diamond board, so you can understand why I want them in SLI.... something I never could afford back in the day.

On another note, a friend of mine who lives in a remote part of the country in the UK bought a PC from me 3 years ago for the internet. It was a Pentium 1 133mhz. Since then he has bought upgrades from me (he's another tight fisted person  :P) and now runs a Duron 800mhz @ 1000Mhz with a VOODOO 2!!!! :D He's a total computer noob, never had a console etc... so going from civilisation 2 to quake 1 GL & quake 2 is a big thing for him, he was blown away by it all. Next week I'll sell him a Geforce 2 Ultra and a copy of Doom III alpha. He'll shit his pants!!!  ;)

Nice one people

One more thing....

If anyone out there is still a quake 1 single player freak .... anyone? get downloading TENEBRAE open souce engine for quake 1. You'll need something better than a voodoo 2 though  ;D aim for a 1gig+ machine and a geforce 2 GTS/PRO AGP at least for a 20fps+ framerate, but it looks amazing. You need to waterVIS your Quake 1 maps as well, instructions are on the TENEBRAE site at sourceforge.

if you manage to get it working with the bumpmapping and real time shadows.. then our voodoos will be ready for doom3  8)

:( I gave it a small shot last night. Does tenebrae require DOT3?  ???

No, Davey's right.  :P I've tried Quake Tenebrae.  It's really good, but very good at sucking the performance of your machine also.  Tenebrae uses heavy Stencil shading (it's an alpha engine of Doom III, I don't know if Doom III is still using the same technology that Tenebrae was extracted from).

With a Voodoo2, you will be seriously limited! I couldn't get it to run on a Voodoo2 SLI.

I had to run it in 320x240 or something like that, on a Geforce2 Pro.  But that doesn't limit the quality.  It's really good eye candy, even at that resolution, so you can imagine what it looked like when I got it to run it in 800x600.  ;D

I think it's hardcore pure 32-bit colour too, so the V2 will have no chance of running it.

Davey, I can't wait for Tenebrae 2.0, that looks absolutely mint! :D

DOT3??  ??? As in DOT3 Pixel Technology?

??? dot3 like dot3 bump mapping...the real bump mapping of it all...  ;D  dunno how dx9 handles it, but for the gforce2 it's still vertex technology..i think it became pixel shader work with ati's pixel shader 1.4/dx8.1..maybe even with p-shader1.1/dx8.0  :-/

Yeah, that's what I meant.
I am not sure if it supports it, I don't know.  I would think it does, seeing as it's an advancement in technology since DOT3, but don't take my word for it. ;)
If so, it would be pointless trying to get older Voodoo cards to run tenebrae.  The other factor is that I am almost sure it is 32-bit colour driven only. So it rules out Voodoo1/2 (and 3, because V3 doesn't support 32-bit colour, does it?)

I think it does. the engine really is comparable to doom3 (though doom3 will look better than updated quake1, and maybe it will run faster too :))

like doom3, tenebrae requires a geforce 1/2 or radeon,  and Pixel shader speed up much the pixel processing

These are the absolutely minimum requirements for Tenebrae 1.04:

GL_ARB_multitexture
GL_EXT_texture_env_combine
GL_EXT_texture_env_dot3
GL_ARB_texture_cube_map
