Title: Quick Voodoo4/5 question
Post by galah on 28.08.03 at 03:01:34
Does the voodoo 4 and voodoo 5 require a processor with MMX capabiliies?

Will it work on a Pentium Pro.

The reason I ask is I read it needs at least a Pentium II on Amazon.com

Thankyou!

It will work, allright! It will work with a Pentium, too!

The problem is, your Voodoo card will yawn waiting for data from the host  ;D

Thanks guys!!!  :)

"The problem is, your Voodoo card will yawn waiting for data from the host " - I like that thought.

Well I bought a voodoo4 4500 from e-bay for $102 Australian ($140 US) which is quite expensive. I could have got a brand new GeForce4 MX 64MB card for $90 AUS.

But that ain't a voodoo is it. ;D

I currently have a Banshee which works fine and will be kept forever ;)

Oh it had to be a PCI card (being a pentium pro 200) and I didn't have room for a Voodoo 5  :'(

Doing my part to keep 3dfx in the hands of gaming fans.

My upgrade process:
Now I've got 256MB of EDO RAM (Max capacity) and a Voodoo 4.

Now I need a Pentium Pro overdrive to convert it to a Pentium  II 333, but they are rare down under. All this to keep up with my Pentium 4 in Counterstrike!!!  8)

Instaled my voodoo4,  good stuff!

Your right, the Pentium pro just can't throw things fast enough at it.

Cunterstrike performance increased so I'm happy. The support for larger textures has also made a few games look heaps better.

Thanks for everyones advice. This site (3dfx archive), and forum rule!!!

3dfx forever!!!

$140?? :o :o :o
These cards are available on ebay for like $40 max, and the shipping can't be $100 (can it?)

Yes it was expensive, and its only cause I love 3dfx that i'd pay that much!!!!

No, that's not the real reason, (we'll its what I tell myself) I don't have a credit card so I couldn't use PayPal which is all most overseas sellers accept. I was also worried about buying something overseas (hassle of postage, customs and the like).

I'm happy with the card, my wallet has recovered and Counterstrike plays much better.

Oh, and there is a cold'y in the fridge.

csskk!! Ahhh refreshing.

Sorry guys I stuffed up. It totalled about $60 US, I was dreaming to think the Aussie dollar was that strong (just a typo or oversite) though one day we'll show you the might of the Aussie Dollar. Ha Ha Ha Ha, gag. :-X

That's still a bit much. You can get a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI for that much...

I think the 4500 AGP is expensive due to it's 1.5/3.3V signalling and Univeral AGP 2.0 edge connection.  I'ts more 'future proof'. ;)

A bit steep though nonetheless! :o
