Title: Unidentified Cards Post by st4r4m4m4 on 08.09.05 at 18:50:18
Now since I have had unidentified 3Dfx cards and I noticed that other collectors also have some of theirs unidentified I tought about creating a topic (this topic) for us users to post our unidentified card's pics, and share knowledge, this also would go for "I have seen something somewhere" situations, just feel free to post the card's pic
(!to prevent flooding the topic I would advise to everyone to first look at FalconFly's identifiying sub-page http://www.falconfly.de/identify-3dfx.htm before posting some pics) Also.. try to post thumbnails with links to the hi-res pics so noone gets bandwith-hurt |

Another good site for identifying 3dfx-cards is 3dfx.cz where some more cards are listed. |

True indeed, I was not sure if mention it or not... but, you just did and such a link in a topic like this is welcome.

hmm 3dfx.cz has lots og false info, that's the disadvantage of that site, the best place for ID'n cards would be Gary's place :)
http://www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/ the most types and all sorts are stored there, it's a real showcase, what you also could do is go to Surrimugge's website :) http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/3dfx_collectors |

Well about identifying sites, since I intend to make a little 3dfx page, I was thinking to make an identifying sub-page combining NitroX's list with pics, all this made in a reliable way, so there is no wrong info/pics like on 3dfx.cz
By pics I meant good photos taken by us collectors so we don't have lo-res 3rd-party pics and for that I would sure need some help here at falconfly's If anyone might be interested in such project feel free to give some opinions. |

My list isn't exactly complete and accurate either.
For instance, I listed the Q3D Voodoo Graphics cards as the Obsidian 50 series and Obsidian 100SB series. Still need to elaborate on that. Don't put all your money on one horse is all I can say. |

Well we'll have to work together then and doublecheck everithing, and in my opinion the best info we can get is directly from a specific card's owner so every item on the list is properly checked.

Sorry I got no horses :P,
Frankly I was mixed up with this site: http://www.3dfx.cz/3dfx.htm eum woops. ::) |

yeah but can you show me that "lot of false info" there?

Just some food for thought which I have NEVER seen anyone consider.
I think 3dfx only planned for the 6000 to run at 183 mhz, after all I have not ever seen one single 4500 or 5500 equipped with 5.5 ns ram. Ever. Why have a 4500 run at 183 when you can purchase a 5500, why have a 5500 run at 183 when you can buy a v5-6000? I bet that was the plan since a big thing about the choice for ram was price and 5.5 is cheaper then 6 ns. The only reason I can see a 4500 running at 183 is for marketing or jerking around on a benchmark but in Quake 3 benches the difference isn't enough to get excited about. |

I rather see benches in Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Tactical Ops or even Descent3, they all have 3dfx Glide, which is more interesting.

aww,c'mon.I'm pretty sure some v4 prototypes report as v4 4800 (I have seen a pic somewhere),and about the chip frequency, this is just how the final card may have been clocked (but it was never released,so no one will ever know for sure).this is not a "false info",just the authors assumption (there is plenty of space for that when you want to talk about the prototypes).
the v5 6500 (the 2x2 not functional prototype): not sure about this,so I'm not going to argue. 5,5 ns Toshiba memory on the second rev (first hint rev) v5 6k cards: can someone confirm this? if its really true I'll pm no-x and he'll fix it. the picture of that v5 6k: possible.if you have more then thousand pictures sometimes the info its not 100% correct.especially with prototype cards.again, can someone confirm this? v5 5200 DDR: this is,once again, just the authors concept how the card may have looked like (he created that picture in mspaint ;D),and his assumption of the cards parameters.this is just a theory, but a good one (he actually wrote that the first prototype would be finished 14 days after 3dfx went down, dunno from where he got that info).. same goes for rampage.half of the info you can find is just theory, simply because there is not enough of 100% verified info available.but for example,if someone who is good with hardware (I'm not :P) looks at the specs,he can guess how fast the card would be pretty easily..as I said,if you have just one prototype and only a handful of verified info, the only limitation is your own imagination ;D so I would say yes, small errors hapen (all the time ;)),but I would certainly not call if "lot of false info" (false info would look like "voodoo3 had 3 TMUs,32mb of memory and was twice as fast as TNT2") or "hoax".theories maybe,or personal theories but certainly not hoax.. |

4500 = 32 mb 4800 = 64 mb 5000 = 32 mb 5500 = 64 mb Never has a 4500/5500 prototype board been spotted with 5.5 ns ram and I think I have most of them including the first 4500 PCB revision and the first 5500 PCB revision. Quote:
5.4 ns ram. I have a 2600 A2 V5-6000 here and it has 5.5 ns ram. The clockspeed on the V5-6000 was dropped in a vain attempt to make it stable. I say vain since the problem was a design flaw that had nothing to do with clockspeed. Daytona SLI- Yes 3dfx was considering a Daytona 5500 & 6000 but I'm sure the projects would have been canned. With Rampage up and running starting a new project that duplicate efforts would have not been smart and Daytona was a chip for OEM market. IF the Daytona 5500 was made it would have been a stacked design. Quote:

Title: Re: Unidentified Cards Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 17.09.05 at 03:22:56
I totally Agree Gary ;)
@ Ps47 the Voodoo4 4500 PCI With TV-Out & DVI has indeed a Voodoo4 4800 Bios but it's actually a Voodoo4 4500 PCI with a Voodoo4 4800 bios, it does not have 64MB like the Voodoo4 4800 AGP with TV-Out & DVI. the Voodoo4 4500 PCI With TV-Out & DVI also has 6ns SDRAM @ 166Mhz, so maybe it was flashed with a Voodoo4 4800 bios to test it with that bios, while it's actual bios is that of a Voodoo4 4500 PCI. Maybe Gary has more onfo of this. |
