Title: What do you think about this Rush
Post by Voodoomaster on 05.07.05 at 19:48:24
Hi there. I bought this card on ebay. Some people don't care much about this cards. It was sent in a letter and so it doesn't work anymore. I haven't seen yet any other picture of such a card. So should I keep it or are there similar cards out there? Does anyone have the possibility to fix it? In this case I would give it away. I only like running cards except they are really rare.

I've got one of these cards, too, but mine has four empty sockets for RAM-chips but no TV-Out. Here is a pic of it.

I think the G105 without TV-Out is more common because I have seen some of the cards floating around without TV-Out but no one with TV-Out.

Seems lot like a 6MB ProComp... some people should take more care for all the various humanity's 3Dfx tecnological inheritage (but we don't need to blame the seller directly since a lot of hardware dies by itself too)

Anyway like most PC components when they die they remain dead
Excluding for some cases when you just need to resolder something, but that does not happen too often
I did that once on a V1's bent capacitor and now is fully working.

Yes, it is a ProComp Voodoo Rush. It has the same ID as this card (image from this very same site):

http://www.falconfly.de/identify/ProComp_G105.jpg (same FCC ID)

But it looks as though it has a TV-out and 2MB as standard. On the one without TV-out, you needed to buy the 2MB upgrade. Or is it 1MB upgrade?

Nice variant of the card, never seen one like this!

;)

@ st4r4m4m4: In this case I think the card was really damaged on the transport. But the card was sold as is and as not tested. So I don't want to blame the seller. It's at your own risk to buy such old cards. By the way the seller also got a good feedback. It would be only nice if all would handel this cards as they handle the new top-cards.

Unfortunately on this card a capacitor is completely broken. On my Intense Rush I was also able to bend back some twisted contacts.

I think it's only 1 Mb you can upgrade on the "normal" card.

Well you could try to replace the broken capacitor, need to get a new one (you can get it at any electronic elements store) and you need some basic soldering skills (not a big deal if you have already handled a soldering iron)
If it's only that it might as well work.

That would be a 2MB "upgrade" (512k per chip)
so the card woud be (as mentioned in the archive) 4 or 6MB

Yah, shouldn't be a problem to replace the capacitor... ;)

Just point out which capacitor on the board is broken ( should have a number like C123 or something) :D

@Eye-Q should be able to check his working card for the value of the capacitor (if it is completely broken off your board). :P

It does depend on whether it's a surface mount capacitor or just one of the larger electrolytic ones (look like small cylinders). ;)

The electrolytic ones are obiously easier to replace! ;D

Just needs a low-watt soldering iron (12-15W) a small soldering bit (0.5-1mm) and some solering wick to remove solder. ;)

If you get stuck with modding, gimme a P.M. and I'll get back to ya'! 8)

PEACE OUT! :)

looks like a Pro Comp Voodoo Rush 8MB with Composite TV-Out and S/Video Out, FalconFly has the 4 MB version, not that odd really.

@ Obi-Wan: It's unlikely that this card has 8 MB because it has 12 RAM-chips. It's rather 6 MB (12 chips of 512 KB), or have you ever seen chips with 666 KB? ;) It wouldn't coincide with the binary system. ;)

@ Voodoomaster: Which capacitor is broken? I can measure the specific capacitor if you tell me which it is.

It's the detached capacitor under the 2D-Chip. It isnt completely broken away so I have the value. Thank you anyway. I will try to replace it. The new one I have allready. As soon as I did it, I will tell you if I could fix it. About the Ram: What does the marking "256Kx16" under the Ram chips mean? The chips seem to be 512Kb.

That refers to the Embedded Array Block (EAB) size within the RAM chips... ;)

This PDF explains it in WAY too much detail! :o

Ok. I've fixed the card. Now in 2D it works without any problem. But in 3D the monitor turns to black and i have to reboot the hole system. I'm working on it ;)

That's probably just a driver thing.
Even I that I'm not good at drivers manage to enable all my cards /*except for a banshee that afaik is death due to electrostatic damage (got it packed in ordinary plastic bag :P )*/
