Title: Quantum3D Obsidian2 90 maximum resolution
Post by RaverX on 21.12.08 at 15:07:35
I think many users of this forum know the card. It's this one : http://tdfx.de/eng/obsidian2_90-2440.shtml. Well, the card has 10 mb of memory, but in UT I can only set 512x384 resolution, anything above will revert to that resolution.

Even the V2 with 8 MB knows 800x600, heck, even the lowly V1 4 MB knows 640x480. Is the memory for frame buffer on the Obsidian2 90 smaller than 2 MB or what ?

no its 2MB, enough for 640x480
my green card have SiliconMagic Memory with marking ...256k16... so its 100% 512kilobyte Chips

in the control panel i can set up to 640x480 @120Hz at the glide test

That's what I thought, it should have 2 MB, but UT don't seem to care much, 512x384 is max with Obsidian2 90. Oh well...

640 x 480 should not be a problem, sounds like it is defaulting to the minimum spec for some reason.

What driver and OS?

Driver : Quantum3D Obsidian2 90/200SB V5.5P
OS : Windows 98 SE

I'll try it in other games and see...

Try using the 3dfx Voodoo II driver, should be fully supported.

I had the same problem with mine. Actually both of them, the Black and the Green one. I ended up selling both of them. I didn't have a back plate for either one and as I recall, there was no 2D input, only a 3D output and didn't want to have to move the monitor cable back and forth.

It's fine as a collector card but that's about it.

I've tested mine with the fastvoodoo driver.
Worked fine for me with 640*480!

But I know that problem, I had it with my Gamewizard V2 in a normal computer.
The driver had a problem with detecting the card, so I had to add higher resolutions in the registry.

I don't remember exactly, but start searching here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\"3dfx Interactive"\Voodoo2

There must be something with the resolutions as the names and the refresh rates as the values (decimal!) .
If there is only 512*384, you have to add 640*480 and the value has to be the refresh rate.

I hope my expression is not to ungrammatical!  ;)

Well, if you have a monitor with at least 2 video inputs, the lack of 2D input it's not an issue anymore.

And yes, it's a nice collector item, only if I could find a black one now...

RaVeNsClaw, thanks, I'll try that.

so
i test it and it works on 640x480

format C:
install windows 98
install Q3D drivers, Ob2_6cf_9x.exe
install UT, the version from the v3 AGP (build400)

i can chose AND USE 512x384 and 640x480
if i chose 800x600 or more it drops to 512x384

Asus P2B-B
Pentium3 800MHz
384MB PC100 SD-RAM
ATI Rage Pro
Creative SB AWE64 Gold (4390)

I tested the card here, too. It runs great using the latest 3dfx Voodoo2 V3.02.02 driver on Windows '98 SE. Both 512x384 and 640x480 resolutions.

The board has 2MB framebuffer and 8MB texture memory and performs just like a regular Voodoo II :).

OK, I'll try to install the V2 driver and see, but I thought Obsidian drivers are better optimized...

I have no idea if they are better, and if they are, in which way :). The Obsidian appears to be a (quite) normal/regular Voodoo2 board aside from the missing D-SUB and the somewhat weird RAM configuration. Basically the chipset is still the same so I think the 3dfx driver might actually be better as they are newer and more optimized for games. Meaning; in a normal PC with normal games it might run better with the latest 3dfx reference (or perhaps FastVoodoo) drivers.

Performance of the board is comparable with normal V2 8MB and V2 12MB using latest 3dfx reference driver. Except  for 3DMark2000, the V2 8MB is ~250 points ahead, the V2 12MB about 430. Benchmarks run with Pentium III-S 1400MHz (Tualatin; 512KB L2).
