Title: 2D Card for Voodoo 1 / 2?
Post by phreakindee on 07.02.09 at 07:57:32
Anyone know of a good stand-alone PCI 2D video card to use with a V1 or V2? Tried with integrated video cards before and it's been a nightmare, never worked right.
Basically, just want to get an old Voodoo card to work, so what card do you guys use with these? I've only always used a V3. Thanks!

Hello, I think S3 Trio is a good card to work with V2.

There are several VGAs out there that work well with V1/V2 cards. If you want good image quality in 2D then go for a Matrox G200/400/450/550 al least 8mb for PCI or you get a TNT/TNT2 or even GForce models but those are a little harder to find for PCI. S3 cards are ok but the image quality is not so great.

Forget the S3, there were problems between Voodoo hardware and S3 hardware, there are patches for that but a different 2D card is a better alternative.

As G1nX said, the Matrox cards are about the best.

And G1nX, suggesting nVidia cards? Shame on you! ;)

Well yes I'm ashamed but they do work. And if you think of the Canopus Spectra it has it's charms even if it's a TNT card. Also a PowerVR Kyro2 card has good image quality if remember correctly and it does come in PCI flavors and does work with Voodoo cards. Hope this makes amends for the previous :P

The Matrox Millenium II & Matrox Mystique 220 are just about the best 2D cards you could ever get for a V1/V2 setup, infact many reviewers used nothing else.

Try it, the 2D quality is phenomenal. :)

Those problems only occur with two (or something) types of S3 cards. The S3 Virge and Trio work fine and are good enough. In fact: the Virge never let me down with 2D games that used UniVBE.

Those Matrox cards are indeed the way to go if it comes to 2D quality :).

Awesome, thanks for all the opinions! I had been looking at some Matrox cards but had no idea which to go with... have some bad memories from my youth with an STB BlackMagic 3D Voodoo2, tried for months to get it to work for NFS3. Never did!

Looking at a MIL2P/4N, hopefully all will go well...

How have you come to this conclusion?

Reviews from back in 1996 when I purchased the card new.

The odd ram used in the ET 6000 design gave it an advantage in speed along with excellent support through display doctor.

As far as the Voodoo2 and 98SE is concerned, what makes all these older 2D (and 2D/3D) cards "better" with a Voodoo2s than a more modern card that has 98SE drivers?  Even though the OP doesn't want things this way, the selection of a good card to pair with V2 is even wider.

Essentially, I just wanted a card that works well with the V2, but still provides some good 2D but not incompatible. I've had some problems in the past where the Voodoo simply did not want to communicate with the 2D card, so was just wondering if there were any suggestions.

I found an ATI Mach64 PCI card, which is working pretty well, but it could be better so I'll keep a lookout.

I actually ran a lightspeed 128 tseng-6000 back in 97/98 on my original v2 sli setup. Never had any problems. Recently I set it up again but with newer parts. Had a geforce 6200 along side the v2s. Actually seemed to work very well. Im actually surprised at how well the v1/v2 setup works, considering they are standalone 3d cards. And the switching off and on etc. Pretty versatile.
