ATI Rage Fury Maxx

A few quick questions regarding ATI's dual gpu solution.  How much do these cards usually go for?  Are they any good?  What were they made to compete against?  Any other information would be helpful too.  Thanks Smiley

Ok, thanks for the info guys.

I am actually 100% ok with using 98SE.  Besides, why would you put a cd on a turn table... (mix new tech with old tech)  The nostalgic value is more imporant to me anyways. Smiley

I had both; the G400Max and the Rage Fury Maxx, but I've sold the Rage, because it makes really ugly textures and it is slower than the G400Max with OGL.

But the biggest problem: The frame-rates are going up and down between 10 and 90 FPS @ Q3A with nearly every resolution and image quality... So you'll need to set down the FPS-limiter to play it.

The D3D support is not bad, but OGL is as poor, as with every Rage128.  Sad

But maybe you could fix this problem with a OGL to D3D wrapper...  Wink

I still have a Retail Fury Maxx but actually never used it in an actual gaming Rig except for some testing/evaluation.

For all I know the Drivers of the Rage series manifested ATIs bad reputation (before the Catalyst concept)

I like it as a historical concept, especially since it was AFAIK the first non-3dfx SLI hardware ever realized. Kudos to ATI for tying it, bad on them that they didn't have the right drivers to unlock its full potential in its time (a fate that the Fury Maxx shares e.g. with the later XGI Volari V8 Duo Ultra)

BTW in light of this - does anyone know of any "custom" driver sets that a third party put together to improve support for this card? Huh

note that there is no chance to get multigpu working under the nt kernel-the way the multigpu is implemented on this card will not allow you (or anyone else) to create a driver that is up to the nt driver requirements/specifications (win2k and newer ms oses are much more restrictive than the 9x line, thats the very reason why they are much more stable)..it is possible to use the card under nt,but only one gpu will be functional and the card will require a BIOS flash as well to be of any use,if memory serves.
