Title: Help me PLEASE!
Post by Tweakstone on 23.11.07 at 16:41:10
I have BIG trouble with my Obsidian 100SB.

When I install the drivers and reboot, the desktop won't load. If I end the rundll32.exe via taskmanager, the desktop will show. When doing so, I can't launch display properties (It just won't load), nor start a game using the obsidian under glide or D3D.

It's the same procedure after every reboot.

The card is listed correctly in the devicemanager (as 2x obsidian secondary display adapter or whatsoever - I'm not in front of the system right now).

I tested several setups..
- S7 Ali chipset
- S7 Intel HX chipset
- Slot1 Intel BX chipset

- Win98 SE
- Win ME

- Quantum 100SB R3 drivers (latest)
- Quantum 100SB R2 drivers

Always exactly the same thing.

Of course I used the batchfile that comes with the drivers to clean old driver files and registry keys prior to install.

And I used a fresh Win Installation for the tests.

Way of installation:

Windows
primary VGA (Matrox Mystique)
Reboot
Obsidian drivers
Reboot, after both of the V1 chipsets are installed

The cards runs fine, if no shades are installed on it.
BUT it doesn't with neither my pair of shades, nor with a pair of 100% functioning shades, that I have from Gary, on it.

When I first tried to get it runnig (1 year ago or so) I had similar problems, until I tried to install it on a P3B-F -> that worked on first try :-/

But I tried to do so again and failed :( :( Even with the new shades.

What the heck??

I hope I get some help, I'm despaired :'(

Thanks in advance..

tray install the driver once
not two times

I don't install it twice, windows finds 2 new devices and I let it install both of 'em before I reboot. Otherwise only half of the card would be installed...

I don't think this will help, but I will try...

€:

This really won't help ;)

Quote:
1. Power on the computer and boot Windows 95.
2. Windows will detect a new PCI Multimedia Video Device and display
   the New Hardware Found dialog.
3. Select the Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer
option and click on the OK button.
4. Insert the Obsidian Graphics Card Family CD-ROM into the CD-ROM
   drive.
5. At the Install from disk dialog, specify D:\WIN95 (where D is the
drive letter of the CD-ROM drive) in the Copy manufacturer's files
from field and click on the OK button.  Windows will copy the
   drivers from the CD-ROM.
6. You will be prompted twice to restart the system.  DO NOT reboot
   the computer when prompted.
7. Windows will detect another new PCI Multimedia Video Device,
recognize that it is a Quantum3D Obsidian Graphics Card Family,
and install the drivers for it.
8. Reboot the computer when prompted.

I agree with exxe. when windows detects new hardware, cancel the driver installation and test it.

Also pull the shades off of it and test (daughter boards).

Worst case, use the latest reference drivers for the Voodoo1 card and lower the gfxclk speed to 50MHz.

We need to determine if it's a hardware or software problem.

The default 3dfx Win9x driver supports 100Sb boards, I'd try those first.

If using the Quantum3D drivers you should see a screen like this-

(I'm showing a DB of course)

You may have a problem with your 100SB I'm afraid if it works fine without the shades.

I really think my card is somewhat defective :(

I tried everything man can do, and it's always the same. Without the shades the card runs fine, be it Glide or be it D3D.

As soon as the shades are plugged onto it, I experience the described problems.

Last try I made was fully installing Win98 on a P3B-F setup, without the obsidian plugged in.

When I installed the Obsidian, it first seemed successful, even the desktop showed up after first reboot. But when I tried to launch the display properties, I got the following message:

The Display Properties didn't open after I confirmed the message.

When I started UT in Glide mode (which the game at least suggested), I got the same message.

So I removed the shades and I was able to launch the display properties (which looked like Gary posted) and was able to do the D3D and Glide Test.
It was also possible to launch UT in Glide Mode and play in 800x600. 3DMark99 also runs fine using the obsidian without shades.

As soon as I reinstall them on the board, I have the same problems again :'(

dumb question: have you tried flipping the shades? meaning installing shade no.1 to the position where shade no.2 was and vice versa..

Accidentally perhaps ;D
I tried 2 Sets of shades already with the same result.

But I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow. I could also try to mix the sets...

As expected, no different results :(
