voodoo5 5500 AGP power consumption
08.04.04 at 21:37:21

Hi.
Can anybody tell me (or provide a working link to..) the power consumption specs of the Voodoo5 5500 64Mb AGP graphics card.

I just picked one up on ebay but its HUGE, requires an extra connection to my PSU and with its two fans looks like it draws A LOT of power!

I'm trying to figure out how much extra PSU grunt I will need to get this thing running OK as I have already started to see post failures and screen drops to monochrome which all look consistent with a power drain on my weak and old PSU.

Grin

Any and all information appreciated.

My computer with my V5 has always had a 400W power supply, although I doubt you really need that much. 300~350W should be plenty. I have the box somewhere, I'm sure it must say, but I've got a bum leg atm, so I can't really go looking for it.

I don't really get why are everyone so concerned about those damn PSU's..

I got a P3, 256mb of ram, a 20gig hdd, 56k modem, sound card, ethernet card, usb2+firewire card, cdrw, dvd, a voodoo4 and 5 fans scattered around the case.

All that running on a 200watt Codegen (aka SuperPower) PSU.

meh..

Hm, I think I've heard something about 47W (full load) for a Voodoo5, which should come close...

I think a VSA chip eats about 12W. A 6k eats up around 60W. Or so I heard...

yarh...3dfx stated once a voodoo5 5500 is satisfied w/ 250watt psu (but you do better w/ 300w). a v5 5500's max power participation is about 30watt.

>>adding<<
if you got a mobo w/ an agpPRO slot, you even don't need to connect your voodoo5 to the psu, as the mainboard delivers enough power. at least, that's my experience.  Wink

Ah, this I did not know!

So what do we define the AGP Pro slot as?

Is it an Universal AGP slot that runs 1x/2x/4x - 3.3v or
2x/4x AGP 2.0 - 3.3v?

I forget. Roll Eyes

it's an agp 2x/4x/8x slot w/ more connectors for more electric power. mainly used by gforce quadro & ati firegl cards, i.e. for hard power consumption boards  Grin
